This Week in Tech India (TWITI) #19 of 2026

Over in the US, the latest (highly nonsense) biggest tech news is Elon Musk dragging OpenAI to court. But we don’t care about that. If this happens though, we would care about it A LOT:

ET reported that Reliance Industries, through Jio Platforms, is exploring a multi-billion-dollar Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite venture to build an India-based rival to Starlink, aiming to deliver high-speed, satellite-based broadband to remote areas. This obviously means that Ambani’s Reliance, whose Jio is already the biggest broadband provider in India, might beat Musk’s Starlink which is much-hyped but not-yet-released in India (except a little bit in Meghalaya).

Just last week, Reliance announced a $17billion investment to build a new data centre cluster in Vishakapatnam. Insane how they can announce billion dollar investment after billion dollar investment. But for now, we’ll leave that thought aside.

At this point let us not underestimate the investment power of Reliance. Jio is arguably the fastest growing conglomerate in India (it’s barely 10 years old) and is slated for the biggest IPO ever. It already has a lot of the biggests – besides being the biggest telecom provider in India, JioHotstar is the biggest streaming service. We spoke earlier about how it was revealed that big names like Google and Meta and other money-d people are big investors in Jio. And a few firsts too – Jio Frames is the first smart glasses announced by an Inidan company (albeit not commercially launched yet).

So for now, I believe that Jio will launch its own remote satellite, and I won’t be surprised if it happens before Starlink “officially” launches in India. But still if this happens, it’s a big embarrassment for Starlink (not that I think Musk really cares about being embarrassed in India).

And it feels like Musk and Ambani are frenemies. First of all, Musk did not attend Ambani’s son’s wedding – AI generated images of him wearing a slick Indian wedding outfit are fake and pissed him off (ironic because a year later he praised Grok’s ability to generate realistic fake images). Then when it was announced that Starlink would enter India, the satellite internet spectrum was allocated administratively as opposed to how the Government previously allocated spectrum – via auction. This is what Musk wanted but Ambani cried foul for. Then, in March 2025 it was announced that Jio and Starlink entered into a deal, where Jio would stock Starlink devices in its retail outlets.

And now, Jio is entering the race – with a headstart in India – to build its own Starlink rival. While starlink has been waiting for full approals since 2022 to fully launch in India, Jio Platforms, which already operates a satellite internet joint venture with Luxembourg-based SES has secured approvals to launch commercial satellite broadband services in the country.

I’d like to see Musk trying to drag Ambani to court the way he’s trying to bully Altman in court.

Cabinet Approves Two New Semiconductor Units

The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, has approved two additional semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), including the country’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display facility based on GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology and a semiconductor packaging unit.

These two projects will establish semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Gujarat with a total investment of around Rs. 3,936 crore and are expected to create jobs for 2,230 skilled professionals.

The details of the two approved proposals are:

  • Crystal Matrix Limited (CML) will set up an integrated compound semiconductor fabrication and ATMP facility in Dholera, Gujarat, to produce Mini/Micro-LED display modules. The plant will also offer GaN foundry services. The products are intended for large-format displays such as TVs and commercial signage, as well as medium-sized screens for tablets, smartphones, and in-car displays, plus micro-displays for XR glasses and smartwatches.
  • Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL) will establish an OSAT facility in Surat, Gujarat, to manufacture discrete semiconductors.

These two approvals takes the total number of sanctioned projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to 12, with combined investments of about Rs. 1.64 lakh crore.

Zee drags Nykaa and JioStar to Court

This is very interesting for me because it’s to do with the use of…. trending audio. Maybe.

This week it was revealed that in a lawsuit filed on April 3 at the Delhi High Court, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL or just Zee) claimed it holds a licensing deal with Meta Platforms that permits users to incorporate its music into Instagram posts for non‑commercial purposes. However, the company alleged that Nykaa deployed multiple Zee‑owned copyrighted tracks in its reels to market products to millions of followers. So Zee is saying that Nykaa used their licensed audio for commercial purposes, but is suing Nykaa (for $210k btw) and not Meta.

A day later, Zee is trying to sue JioHotstar for a similar reason. Zee has initiated legal action against the Reliance–Disney joint venture, accusing it of using Zee’s copyrighted music without permission after the relevant licensing deals had lapsed. Court filings reviewed by Reuters show that the case was submitted in New Delhi on April 14 and is seeking damages of $3 million.

The Delhi HC has already instructed Zee to mediate with JioStar, and has barred JioStar from using Zee’s music on its platform while the mediation is ongoing.

One thing is for sure, we need stronger IP lawyers in India. Kudos to Zee for protecting its licensed content. The other millions of music creators in India are not so lucky.

Deepinder Goyal’s “Temple” up for Pre-order

Zomato founder and former CEO Deepinder Goyal (who I called Arrogant Goyal at the start of 2026) said that he has opened the pre-orders for Temple, this new wearable health device. Goyal says that the Temple is now ready to ship for the first 100 customers who can pre-order the device.

Goyal says that the Temple is a wearable for “elite performance athletes” that measures metrics that no other wearable currently tracks, with a high level of precision. PV Sindhu was seen wearing one recently. Goyal even bought the domain temple.com

Pre-orders must be applied for via their website by filling a form. No price details are on the site. Note that some doctors have rubbished this device, so hold your rupees.

SEBI approves $1billion IPO for Zepto

It almost feels like I need a section (or sub-section) in every week’s TWITI for quick commerce news.

Indian quick commerce darling Zepto which filed IPO papers recently got SEBI approval to raise anywhere between ₹9,000 to ₹12,000 crores. And while it feels like Zepto has been around forever, it is only four years old. If the IPO goes as planned, Zepto will become the youngest venture-backed Indian startup to become public.

Good thing they shifted domicile back to India from Singapore – before Flipkart did. And they might beat Flipkart to an IPO too. Talk about quick commerce.

Five Finds of the Week

This week’s theme is gaming controllers. Valve launched the Steam Controller very recently and it looks amazing. It’s cool to have controllers that work across devices – for example, Nintendo’s Pro controller (first link below) works for the Switch and also for Apple TV. And maybe the iPad too.
