Now, here is the most relevant tech news for India from the last seven days, with the reason why they matter.

Tata Group to sign MoU with 10 more semiconductor companies

The Tata Group is signing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with ten semiconductor companies (in addition to existing partners like ASMPT, DISCO, Cadence, Best and Tokyo Electron who are already setting up presence in India through Tata) and has begun construction of a ₹27,000 crore Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Assam that will produce up to 48 million chips daily. India’s government confirmed that semiconductor fabrication plants in Assam will begin production by 2026, part of broader infrastructure development in the region that includes railway improvements and IT hub development.

Why it matters: 48 million chips a day! Remember not so long ago when the global chip shortage drove up prices of anything that had a computing unit in it – from PCs to cars? This is HUGE. Globally, semiconductor investments are the need of the hour – it’s what Apple and Open AI are investing billions of in the US and it’s what propelled Taiwan and China to global tech dominance. Any device that requires compute needs a semiconductor, and in today’s world that means more than half the things around us.

Truly, I can’t tell you how excited I am about this and the long term positive impact it will have on Tech India. This is a big leap towards “Make in India”, “Atmanirbhar” and global tech dominance.

Samsung India workers strike again – and it’s bigger this time

The ongoing workers’ protest at Samsung’s Sriperumbudur manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, involving over 500 employees, has entered its 17th day, with demands for the reinstatement of three suspended union leaders and opposition to the use of contract workers in production. Despite multiple conciliation talks facilitated by the Tamil Nadu Labour Department, the dispute remains unresolved, and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has announced plans for a broader strike in March to escalate pressure on Samsung.

Why it matters: the earlier strike in Samsung’s Sriperambudur plant that occurred close to Diwali ended with the workers being allowed to unionize. Suspending the union leaders by management of the plant counts as retaliation, and is in poor taste. The Government should intervene to resolve the workers’ demands before this strike spreads to the entire industrial corridor in Tamil Nadu – where components are made not only for Samsung but also Apple, Motorola, Dell, HP, Hyundai, Ford, Renault-Nissan and many, many more.

Jio TeleOS to debut on Thomson’s 43-in 4K TV

Image: Thomson India

Jio has launched India’s first home-grown smart operating system for TVs called Jio TeleOS. Reliance says it is designed to cater to Indian audiences with features like AI-powered content recommendations, seamless integration of regional and global content, and support for OTT apps, TV channels, and cloud gaming.

Thomson (French TV maker) became the first brand to launch a Smart TV powered by JioTele OS. The 43-inch 4K QLED TV, priced at ₹18,990, was unveiled on February 21, 2025, and is available exclusively on Flipkart.

Why it matters: maybe one day Reliance (or Tata) could make a world-class TV, then we’d have a complete home-grown primary entertainment device that will give us more value-per-rupee than even Sony or Samsung. But hey, [PLUG] you can watch my YouTube shorts on the YouTube app on most TVs right now – make sure you subscribe to my channel!

Anyway, I think it’s cool that Jio is developing such a key piece of software that has the potential of being in most homes. Plus I’d love for Jio to even develop a mobile OS – like Huawei and others did.

Paytm partners with Perplexity to bring AI powered search to Paytm App

Image: Payton

Paytm has partnered with Perplexity AI to integrate AI-powered search features into its app, providing users with real-time insights into financial decisions, market trends, and everyday queries in local languages. The collaboration aims to enhance digital accessibility and financial literacy for millions of Indian consumers.

Why it matters: the part of this story I like the best is that the AI feature is related to search and knowledge generation, and not giving AI control over any financial transaction or security parameters like other fintech platforms globally are trying to do. I would be very reluctant to trust AI to have any kind of access to my financial transactions.
