This Week in Tech India (TWITI) #21 of 2025

This week started with US President Donald Trump saying he “doesn’t want Apple to Build in India” and then Apple saying they will build in India and then Trump saying these phones will be subject to at least 25% tariff and then Apple saying… nothing.

I wonder how the US President will convince one of the most valuable companies in the world that makes one of the most successful products in the world to change its plans.

Here’s what else happened this week in Tech India:

  • Foxconn to invest $1.5 billion in India operation expansion to support Apple’s ‘diversification’ strategy. This is obviously to produce more iPhones in India.
  • Tata Electronics starts assembling iPhones 16 and 16e units in its Hosur plants, also to support Apple’s ‘diversification’ strategy.
  • UP Government launches ‘AI Pragya Yojana‘ initiative aiming to train 10 lakh citizens in critical skills including AI.
  • Satellite communications (e.g. Starlink) will be available in India, and plans may actually start at ₹840/- per month ($10 in today’s exchange rate)
  • Titan Eye Plus launches the Ray-Ban Meta Smartglasses in India which are now available for retail.
  • Le Wagon, a popular international coding bootcamp and training institution, is set to launch a cohort in India.
  • Zomato introduces new long-distance delivery charges.

What stood out this week is that there are already a lot of iPhones made in India, and there will only be more iPhones made in India. But will that mean that the iPhone will one day be cheaper in India than it is globally? I’m not so sure. Anyway, read my post about how much I think it costs Apple to make one iPhone 16 Pro Max.

That’s it for now, see you next week! If there’s anything I missed please let me know.
