Here’s the weekly tech news roundup for Tech India:

US iPhones to be Sourced from India by 2026

The reports were going around for a few days – but now posted by India’s IT Minister:

This is of course related to the tariffs (which exempted smartphones but are threatening to include them again – who knows) but also a move by Apple to reduce its high dependance on China. Apple plans to source from India the more than 60 million iPhones sold in the US annually by the end of 2026 – a commitment that would require more than doubling iPhone assembly in India.

Opinion: what is not clear is will Indian manufacturing concerns be contracted by Apple directly, or through its Chinese sub-contractors or vendors like Foxconn (which is currently operating India’s biggest iPhone component manufacturing unit in Sriperumbudur). The second concern I have is as an Indian consumer – will the price of iPhones in India eventually reduce, or will Nirmala Aunty introduce new taxes to keep the price up? Anyway, overall good move for India.

Samsung and Google May Shift Smartphone Production from Vietnam to India

Also tariff related Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. is in a round of talks with Foxconn and Dixon (which just announced a 1000cr laptop plant in Chennai – see TWITI #16 of 2026) and is asking partners to source components locally. Samsung too is evaluating this shift. This is because Trump’s tariffs on Vietnam is a lot higher than India’s 46% to 26%.

Opinion: I’m a little less excited if this potential move is purely motivated by tariffs. I have been following the tariff news for a while now, and can tell you that the tariff policy is all but…. whimsical. Let’s see if the tariffs will stick.

Samsung to Invest ₹1,000 crore in Tamil Nadu plant

TRB Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce, took to X to share the investment news, saying: “The company’s additional investment reinforces their faith in the labour force of Tamil Nadu.” He also said Samsung would create 100 additional jobs at the facility. However, the minister did not give details about the time frame of the investment.

It is worth noting that Samsung’s Sriperumbudur facility makes refrigerators, washing machines, and televisions, and in 2022-2023, it accounted for a fifth of Samsung India’s $12 billion sales.

Opinion: this is great, but let’s not forget about the strikes and protests that happened in 2024 and early 2025. See TWITI #5 of 2025.
