Here is the most relevant tech news for India from the last seven days, with the reason why they matter. I make such a post every week so you can stay informed to ultimately make smarter tech purchase decisions.
Government and Tata pledge massive financial support for India Semiconductor Mission

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and Tata Group companies—Tata Electronics and Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing—have signed a Fiscal Support Agreement to establish India’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. Tata Electronics will invest over ₹91,000 crore in the facility, which aims to produce 50,000 wafer starts per month and is expected to create over 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs.
Why this matters: I have been saying this many weeks in a row – semiconductors, not AI, will propel India to global tech dominance. Tata is taking Tech India in the right direction. In the long run, this will benefit almost all tech consumers in India because we will have more tech components (and eventually more tech products) made in India, which bring about price competency and better service support. Also great for the economy – jobs, GDP and all that good stuff.
Note: “Wafer Starts Per Month” (WSPM) refers to the number of raw silicon wafers that begin the manufacturing process in a semiconductor fabrication facility (fab) within a month. It is a key metric used to measure the production capacity and efficiency of a fab. Each wafer goes through multiple complex steps, such as layering and etching, to produce integrated circuits (chips).
This metric helps assess the scale of operations and is often used in capacity planning and forecasting for semiconductor manufacturing.

Tata Technologies Data Leaked After Ransomware Attack

Tata Technologies experienced a ransomware attack in January 2025, and the Hunters International group has now leaked 1.4TB of data, including employee details and confidential documents. While the connection to the original attack is unconfirmed, the leaked data includes over 730,000 documents and impacts current and former employees, as well as customer contracts.
Why this matters: In stark contrast to the good news about Tata Technologies from above. This is a good reminder that all the progress in the world should not come at the cost of weak privacy and security.

Jio and Airtel Partner with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to India

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have partnered with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite broadband services in India, pending regulatory approvals. Jio says that the collaboration aims to expand high-speed internet access to remote and underserved areas, complementing Jio’s existing broadband offerings like JioFiber and JioAirFiber.
Why it matters: in the long run, I dare say, Starlink will not matter much in India. It’s more of a passing fad than a value add. I include this here so that you stay informed but also stay smart and – if and when it is available in India – think 1,000 times before buying a Starlink dish thinking it will get you better connectivity and internet speeds than your current broadband.

Coforge Makes AI Deals and Partnerships

Coforge (formerly NIIT Technologies) has made two key pieces of news this week:
- Coforge and Sabre Corporation have signed a 13-year, $1.56 billion deal to accelerate AI-driven product innovation and delivery in the travel industry. The partnership positions Coforge as a key player in enhancing Sabre’s product roadmap, emphasizing speed, scale, and advanced technology solutions.
- Coforge is expanding its partnership with ServiceNow by launching a GenAI Center of Excellence (CoE) in Greater Noida, India, combining Coforge’s Quasar AI framework with ServiceNow AI Agents. The CoE will enable organizations to pilot and scale AI solutions, addressing industry-specific challenges and enhancing customer experiences across sectors like finance, insurance, healthcare, and travel.
Why it matters: I’d rather have home grown AI when I’m at home (India), because if my data will be used for training AI models without my consent I’d rather it stays in India. Anyway, Coforge is a real success story in tech companies that stand the test of time and keep up with the market. Most people wouldn’t have heard of Coforge but may have heard of NIIT (thanks to Vishwanathan Anand’s brand ambassador-ing no doubt) but they have been around for a long time.

DPIIT and Mercedes-Benz India Collaborate to Empower Startups
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and Mercedes-Benz India have signed an MoU to support startups with infrastructure, mentorship, funding, and market linkages. This partnership aims to foster innovation, sustainability, and societal development while advancing road safety and manufacturing excellence in India.
Why it matters: more incentive for startups to exist (and thrive) in India. Check out one of my earlier posts about how the Union Budget wants you to be a startup founder in India.
