Okay it was more fun to read the title the first time. But you’ll remember it won’t you?
Sure OnePlus is not the first to use genius level marketing. But being the first in this industry doesn’t matter. It’s about being the biggest at the moment.
Apple did this more than once. The iPhone moved from iPhone 7 to iPhone 8 to iPhone 10, to mark 10 years since the launch of the first iPhone. iOS moved – very recently – from iOS 18 to iOS 26, because it’s going to be in 2026.
Android’s naming of each version after a desert was never meant to be in perpetuity, it was nice to follow the alphabetical order. But that stopped when Vanilla Ice Cream was succeeded by Baklava.
Numbers, though, last forever. Android 15 was succeeded by Android 16, which is the version at the time of publishing this post.
Clearly, it’s all marketing. And it works.
Speaking of 16, OnePlus is releasing OxygenOS 16 on October 16.
