In the run up to Prime Day 2025, I’m doing a series of blog posts on the aspects of online shopping that no one is brave enough to tell you but you absolutely need to know. Share this with your friends who think they’re saving money by indulging in Prime Day shenanigans.
50% off on iPhone 15? Here’s why that deal might cost you more than money
Picture this: You’re scrolling through your phone during your lunch break when a pop-up ad catches your eye. “iPhone 15 – 50% OFF! Limited Time Only!” The website looks legitimate, complete with Apple’s familiar design and even customer reviews. You’re tempted to click “Buy Now” – after all, who doesn’t want to save ₹50,000 on the latest iPhone?
But here’s the harsh reality: that “incredible deal” might just be your ticket to becoming another victim of India’s rapidly growing online fraud epidemic. According to recent cybercrime reports, Indians lost over ₹1,420 crores to online shopping frauds in 2024 alone, with fake product scams accounting for nearly 40% of these losses.

The Anatomy of E-commerce Fraud in India
The Fake Website Trap
Fraudulent websites targeting Indian consumers have become increasingly sophisticated. These scam sites employ several deceptive tactics:
Domain Mimicry: Scammers create websites with URLs that closely resemble legitimate retailers. Instead of “flipkart.com,” you might encounter “flipkart-india.com” or “flipkrt.com” – subtle differences that can easily fool unsuspecting shoppers.
Visual Cloning: These sites steal logos, color schemes, and even entire page layouts from genuine e-commerce platforms. They’ll copy product descriptions, fake customer reviews, and even create convincing “About Us” pages.
Payment Gateway Spoofing: Fake sites often display logos of trusted payment gateways like Paytm, PhonePe, or Razorpay without actually using their secure systems. Your payment details get captured by fraudsters instead of being processed securely.
Social Media Amplification: Scammers heavily promote these fake sites through sponsored posts on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp groups, targeting specific demographics with “exclusive offers.”
The Counterfeit Product Crisis
Even on legitimate platforms, counterfeit products have become a major concern for Indian consumers:
Quality Nightmares: Fake electronics often lack proper safety certifications, posing fire hazards and electrical risks. Counterfeit skincare products may contain harmful chemicals that can cause severe skin reactions.
Zero Warranty Protection: Duplicate products come with fake warranty cards and non-existent customer support, leaving buyers stranded when problems arise.
Health and Safety Risks: Fake pharmaceuticals, baby products, and food items can pose serious health risks to consumers and their families.

- Limited payment options or requests for direct bank transfers
- Poor grammar and spelling in website content
- Lack of clear return and refund policies
- No physical address or customer service contact information
- Pressure tactics like “Only 2 items left!” or countdown timers
Case Studies: When Deals Go Wrong
Case 1: The Samsung Galaxy Scam
Rajesh from Bangalore thought he’d struck gold when he found a Samsung Galaxy S23 for ₹25,000 on what appeared to be Samsung’s official website. After paying through a “secure” payment link, he received a cheap Chinese knockoff worth less than ₹3,000. When he tried to contact customer service, the website had vanished entirely.
The Cost: ₹25,000 lost, plus the hassle of filing police complaints and bank disputes.
Case 2: The Skincare Disaster
Priya from Mumbai ordered premium skincare products from a fake Nykaa lookalike website. The counterfeit products contained harmful chemicals that caused severe skin burns, requiring medical treatment costing ₹15,000.
The Cost: ₹8,000 for fake products + ₹15,000 medical expenses + emotional trauma.
Case 3: The Electronics Nightmare
A small business owner from Delhi ordered 10 laptops from a fraudulent site offering “wholesale prices.” He received empty boxes and lost ₹2 lakh, nearly forcing him to shut down his business.
The Cost: ₹2 lakh + business reputation damage + legal fees.
Case 4: The Guitar that Never Was
Erick (me) was mindlessly scrolling Facebook at work when he came across an ad for an electric guitar he always wanted on sale at 90% off. Erick messaged the Facebook page and got a response, so he thought it was genuine. The page stated that the guitar will be delivered to Erick in 5 to 7 days. So Erick excitedly filled in the order form and paid ₹16,00, only for that page itself to be deleted from Facebook the next day and Erick feeling like a fool.
The Cost: ₹16,000 + the desire to educate Tech India on the dangers of online shopping.
