Don’t Celebrate Billion Dollar Investments in AI Infrastructure Just Yet

In the last couple of days, three big American companies (well, two big tech and one slightly obscure Trump-affiliated company) announced more than 60 billion USD in investments in India over the next few years.

The investment is primarily for “AI Infrastructure”. And therein lies the problem. AI infrastructure is mostly data centers. What else can it be?

AI infrastructure is power hungry, resource hungry, land hungry, very hungry overall.

It’s bad for the environment. It’s bad for the people living around the data center.

It may be good for the economy. But at what cost? Generating billions for a few while raising prices for the masses?

This is what is happening in the US. Now, more than 200 groups have written to the Government to put a moratorium on data centers. Mostly because the people living near those data centers are experiencing higher electricity bills.

Maybe that’s why these big American dollar-hungry companies are turning to India.
