The Tesla Costs MORE Than 60 Lakhs in India

It’s here – officially. Tesla’s first showroom in India opened in Mumbai. Tesla India. Yay?

Here’s all you need to know:

  • The Model Y is available in two variants in India: Rear-wheel Drive and Long Range Rear-wheel Drive.
  • Gets single exterior and interior colour options. Additional choices cost up to Rs 1.85 lakh extra.
  • The India-spec Model Y has a claimed range of up to 622 km and a top speed of 201 kmph.
  • Prices start at ₹59,89,000/- (ex-showroom) for the Model Y standard, for ₹67,89,000/- (ex-showroom) for the long range variant.
  • The full self-driving option of the Model Y commands Rs 6 lakh extra.

By the way, the term “ex-showroom” is used with car prices because it represents the base price of the vehicle before taxes, registration, insurance, and other additional charges are added to make it road-legal. Essentially, it’s the price of the car as it leaves the manufacturer’s or dealership’s showroom.

Now what is NOT included in the price above are the following, which you will most likely (and in many cases will have to) buy for your Model Y:

  • Taxes
  • Registration
  • Insurance
  • Charging equipment:
    • Home charging station (Tesla wall connector – the Tesla supercharger network is under the early stages of development in India and globally Tesla is not always compatible with other EV chargers)
    • Mobile connectors and adapters (Tesla usually includes a mobile connector, however additional plug adapters may be necessary for different charging situations or travel needs)
    • Charger cable organiser (because you want to be fancy like that)
  • Interior Protection and Organization (because the interior of the Model Y looks delicate and plain and boring as f***):
    • Floor mats
    • Seat covers
    • Centre console organiser (yes this is a thing)
    • Screen protector (not the biggest screen in an EV but still)
  • Exterior Protection:
    • Mud flaps (because India)
    • Paint protection film (because one scratch and $$$)
    • Sunshade
  • Maintenance and Emergency:
    • Detailing / cleaning kit (apparently special Tesla kits are formulated for different materials and surfaces)
    • Air Compressor and tire repair kit (just in case)
    • Jack pads (for safe tire changes without damaging the battery or chassis)
  • Others:
    • Phone mount (hehe)
    • Portable fridge (okay don’t need this, I’ll stop here)

We don’t yet have the prices of all the accessories above, but you can expect that 60 lakhs to easily go above 70 lakhs. What we do know is that the full self-driving option is another 6 lakhs more. And there’s some autopilot membership that you’ll have to pay for every month – if it ever comes to India that is.

I get that the above is mostly true for any luxury car, and Tesla registers as a luxury car. If you spend 60 lakhs buying a BMW, most people (me included, although I’ll admit I have never bought a luxury car) will spend at least 5 lakhs buying accessories and insurance and stuff.

But let’s not forget that this is Tesla, which is an American-made EV.

I’ll just leave you with this quote:

Compared to global markets (e.g., ₹38.6 lakh in the US, ₹30.5 lakh in China), India’s pricing includes a ₹21 lakh duty per unit, limiting mass market appeal in a country where EVs are less than 5% sales and luxury cars ~1%.
